8) MatteReal
Yunchul KIM 金允哲(South Korea)
Artist, Electroacoustic Music Composer, Founder of Studio Locus Solus in Seoul
In this talk, Kim focuses on practices and convergences in his recent works and how they can be fluctuating at a junction where material, immaterial, arts, science and technology meet.
MatteReal is the world of materials that is constantly fluctuating, being entangled, implicated, and becoming in the spatial-temporal world of reality of material. Nothing is independent from the world and this world of matter is continuously fluctuating and becoming. It enables our thoughts to entangle with huge ontological horizons and even imaginary things which have not become real things yet. In such a world of ‘things thinging’, realities and things are emerged in phenomena through their own materiality. As Latin ‘res’, the etymology of the word ‘reality’, also means ‘thing’, realities and things are another name for the event in an ongoing process.

Dr Lam Lecture
In his public lecture, “Looking with the eyes, seeing with the brain” (8 December 2018), Dr. Lam Yuen-wah pointed out that our eyes receiving light is only the first step of a three-step intricate process of how we see. Seeing is a process of emergence: we first recognize edges, then lines and shapes before we see faces and objects.
