Synopsis

This two part installation incorporating i n / i n+1  and Untitled (Mind Cut) is a response to, and interpretation of, Chang Shi-kuo’s sci-fi story《青春泉》”The Fountain of Youth.”

It is an experimental monitoring machine that observes processes, based on a hypothesis made from studying the reincarnation procedures described in “The Fountain of Youth.” In it, “eternal life” is achieved by transplanting a person’s brain into their cloned body. To reduce failure from transplant surgeries and brain cell decay, the human brain is transformed to possess the ability to replicate memory in the cloned body. The machines in this work explore what side effects and problems may occur to a person who goes through the reincarnation process, and evaluate the feasibility and promise of such a human eternal project by reincarnation.

簡介

i n / i n+1Untitled (Mind Cut)

Concept Statement

After reading Chang Shi-guo’s short story collection, Nebula Suite, I decided to use “The Fountain of Youth” as the base and combine it with elements from one other story, “Return” 歸.

I have interpreted memory loss caused by drugs in “Return” to be the result of the multiple reincarnations described in “The Fountain of Youth”, leading to a disorder of consciousness whereby the use of drugs is a necessary way of escaping from reality. In the moment of reincarnation, the old-”I” is confronted by the young-”I”. The former is expressed as a “phantom” while communication activities between them show that they each have their own originality, distinguishing the latter from the one before reincarnation. In my hypothesis, reincarnation is the process of transplanting a brain from the old to the young, and I change the old-”I”, retaining a trace of its original consciousness, into a memory-mirroring process. One of my previous artworks ( i/ i , 2014) echoes the moment of reincarnation in “The Fountain of Youth”. For this exhibition, I have modified my previous work into the “reincarnation machine”. The current version i n / i n+1 has two monitors rotating together. In every cycle there is a moment when both monitors face each other, forming a mirroring situation. As a result, images on both monitors are also mirror images: rotation renders images on both monitors to be at once subject and object, the origin and the imitation.

In the other part of the installation, Untitled (Mind Cut), the physical rotation of images sculpts a virtual head. As different head images blend together into the blurry form of a single head, another set of rotation interrupts the head rotation once every cycle, cutting into the head image. This work serves as a reflection to the first part of the work, i n / i n+1.  Whereas i n / i n+1 explores the exterior of a phenomenon (outward appearance), Untitled (Mind Cut) explores the phenomenon from within, the inner expression of a man in the process of reincarnation.

Untitled (Mind Cut) 將作為 i n / i n+1 的映照, i n / i n+1 呈現「轉世」的外部事件,而 Untitled (Mind Cut) 則呈現個體在「轉世」時的內部精神面貌。
